GNR Public Health, your local health department, encourages all women to take steps towards taking care of their health. We offer a variety of women’s services in five health centers and are here to help all women including the uninsured, low-income, underinsured and those seeking care at a reduced cost.

Family Planning

A woman’s reproductive health is a vital part of living a healthy life. The health department provides a variety of services to help women take control of their reproductive health.

  • Contraception (birth control)
  • Pelvic exams including Pap tests and HPV if recommended
  • Cervical cancer screening including Pap tests
    • Routine pelvic exams are recommended for women starting at age 21 unless recommended earlier or more frequently by a care provider.
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Reproductive education including birth control
  • Perinatal care management (PCM) PCM supports women throughout pregnancy and after birth.
    • Prenatal care referrals
    • Application assistance for Perinatal Medicaid
    • Application assistance for WIC (Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program)

Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings

Regular breast and cervical health screenings are vital for a woman’s well-being, yet accessing these tests can be challenging for some women. Our Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) is here to help eligible women between the ages of 21-64 access low- or no-cost screenings, pelvic exams, and pap tests.

  • Mammograms
  • Clinical breast exams
  • Pap tests
  • Assistance with Women’s Health Medicaid applications for women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer
  • Referrals to care

Low-income or uninsured women who have been diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer may be eligible for Medicaid for cancer or pre-cancer treatment.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening

The CDC estimates that one in five people in the U.S. had an STI in 2018, with many not showing symptoms. Fortunately, most STIs are treatable. We’re here to help you catch and address them early with services like STI screening, treatment, and education and counseling. Take control of your sexual health with:

HEalthy Lifestyle Promotion

At GNR Public Health, we have women’s services that promote a healthy lifestyle.

  • Routine annual physicals for all women, including women who are low-income, uninsured, or undocumented.

  • Resources for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight

Community Health Assessment / Community Health Improvement Plans

Community Health Assessments (CHA) and Community Health Improvement Plans (CHIP) have been created for the three counties we serve.

The community-wide health assessment, which examines the county’s health status, is intended to help shape the collaborative efforts to improve the health of residents.

The community health improvement plan describes how the Health Department and a variety of community partners will work together to improve the health of the population through various projects and programs.

What’s an epidemiologist?​

Epidemiologists are public health workers who investigate patterns and causes of disease and injury. They seek to reduce the risk and occurrence of negative health outcomes through research, community education and health policy.
