WIC Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding Support and Resources

By choosing to breastfeed you have chosen to provide the best nutrition for your baby and a healthy option for yourself. Women, Infants & Children (WIC), GNR Public Health, and our local community offer many services to support breastfeeding mothers like you.

You will find our community offers a variety of breastfeeding support — prenatal breastfeeding classes, breastfeeding peer counselors, certified lactation consultants, community support groups, help obtaining breast pumps and more.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselors

A Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a WIC Mom who lives in the community and has breastfed her own child. She provides prenatal and post-partum support to encourage you throughout your breastfeeding journey.

Contact your local WIC clinic to make an appointment with a lactation consultant or WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.

PRENATAL BREASTFEEDING CLASSES

Taking a breastfeeding class before your baby is born can help you feel more confident about breastfeeding and can help you avoid common breastfeeding challenges.

“Ready for Baby” is a facilitated discussion group preparing moms for feeding their baby after delivery. Classes are taught by each clinic’s nutrition and lactation staff.

Breast Pump PROGRAM

Not every mom needs a breast pump to successfully breastfeed. However, breast pumps may be necessary if your baby is unable to latch correctly, if you are going back to work or school, or if you need to be away from your baby for long periods of time. Contact your Health Center to see if you are eligible for a breast pump.

Community Health Assessment / Community Health Improvement Plans

Community Health Assessments (CHA) and Community Health Improvement Plans (CHIP) have been created for the three counties we serve.

The community-wide health assessment, which examines the county’s health status, is intended to help shape the collaborative efforts to improve the health of residents.

The community health improvement plan describes how the Health Department and a variety of community partners will work together to improve the health of the population through various projects and programs.

Access each county’s CHA and CHIP below:

What’s an epidemiologist?

Epidemiologists are public health workers who investigate patterns and causes of disease and injury. They seek to reduce the risk and occurrence of negative health outcomes through research, community education and health policy.
