ServSafe Food Safety Certification

The current Georgia Food Code requires that each facility have at least one staff member that has managerial or supervisory responsibilities to hold a nationally-recognized food safety manager certification. Gwinnett Environmental Health offers the ServSafe Food Safety Manager course and exam (by the National Restaurant Association Solutions).  Visit ANSI National Accreditation Board’s website for other nationally accredited food safety manager certification programs.

Location

Gwinnett Environmental Health offers the ServSafe Food Safety Manager course and exam. The office is located at 455 Grayson Highway Suite 600, Lawrenceville, GA 30046 (770) 963-5132.

Course Schedule and Class Size

The course information is taught on the first day and a review and the exam are given on the second day. On the first day, the class runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an hour break for lunch. On the second day, the class begins at 8:30 a.m. and students may leave once they have completed the exam. The class size is limited to 15 students.

How to Register

To register for the course, come to the Gwinnett Environmental Health office to pay for the course and pick up the textbook.

Cost

The cost of the course is $150 per student. The fee for the class includes a copy of the textbook.

Preparing for the course

It is strongly recommended that you read the textbook prior to the course. This is a comprehensive course that covers many areas of food safety including food-borne illnesses, proper food handling, personal hygiene, and facility design and maintenance. The course is a mixture of lectures, videos, and discussions that moves at a fast pace. The entire textbook will be covered during the one day of course instruction.

ServSafe exam

The exam is a standardized test which is developed by the National Restaurant Education Foundation. Find out more at www.servsafe.com.

Exam results are typically available online at www.servsafe.com 10 days after the exam. Grade reports and certificates will be mailed out approximately 2 weeks after the exam date.

If you take the course and exam but do not pass the exam, you may register to take a retest any time the exam is offered at our office. The charge for retesting is $60. If you fail to pass the exam a second time, you must wait 90 days to take the exam a third time.

Class Rescheduling

If you register for the class but are unable to attend, you may reschedule once at no additional charge. If you need to reschedule, please give as much notice as possible so that your spot in class may be given to another student.

If you cancel more than once, you must pay the $150 registration fee again.

Community Health Assessment / Community Health Improvement Plans

Community Health Assessments (CHA) and Community Health Improvement Plans (CHIP) have been created for the three counties we serve.

The community-wide health assessment, which examines the county’s health status, is intended to help shape the collaborative efforts to improve the health of residents.

The community health improvement plan describes how the Health Department and a variety of community partners will work together to improve the health of the population through various projects and programs.
